In 1909 St. Louisians could enroll in the Muegge Institute for a $10 per-term tuition fee and receive physical education instruction from teachers with a national reputation. Classes were divided by gender and age, and women could study diving, swimming, fencing, tennis, and gymnastic activities including Indian Club, Dumbbells, and “Fancy Steps.†The Institute offered group classes, private instruction, and physical therapy for those suffering from a variety of maladies ranging from curvature of the spine and partial paralysis to general weakness and nervousness.
