In March 1878, several prominent St. Louis businessmen proposed an annual event similar to Mardi Gras. The men formed a secret organization called the “Mysterious Order of the Veiled Prophet,” and every year they held a parade followed by an elaborate ball. Guests at the ball received an ornate invitation and a dance program like this one from the 1909 ball.
