A text book of true temperance: for all who love liberty too well to abuse it
This book, published by the United States Brewers’ Association in 1909, was a response to the temperance movement that had been gaining strength since the late 1800’s. The Brewer’s Association advocated moderate alcohol consumption as opposed to abstinence, using arguments such as “Nutritive value of beer,†“Thrifty, beer-drinking Belgium,†and “Beer good for baseball players". Further development of these arguments and their counterarguments would lead to the ratification of Prohibition in 1919 and its 1933 repeal.
