Drawing Upon Stone: John Caspar Wild's Early Views of the Midwest
July 1, 2006 - July 8, 2007
Although John Caspar Wild produced some of the finest and rarest American city views of the 19th century, he " and his artistic achievements " remain virtually unknown. Many of his prints and paintings are the earliest known depictions of American towns and chronicle the cultural and economic developments of westward expansion. The retrospective exhibition, featuring more than 30 paintings and lithographs, explored how this European artist created urban and rural landscapes in pursuit of a livelihood in America.
