Gateway Author Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in Gateway, the magazine of the Missouri Historical Society. Gateway publishes articles on St. Louis’s and Missouri’s cultural, social, and political issues, both historical and contemporary. Submissions for full-length essays ideally run 3,500 to 5,000 words (not including notes). Gateway also publishes shorter essays, which run approximately 1,500 to 2,500 words. We are actively seeking topics within the areas of preservation and architecture; folk culture and oral history; music and theater traditions; civil rights and African American history, as well as original poetry, photography, and literature. We are also interested in essays on individual Missourians and in the history of communities, organizations, and movements in St. Louis. The best way to understand our focus is to purchase a copy of a current Gateway, available at the Louisiana Purchase Gift Shop at the Missouri History Museum, Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park (314-454-3172; e-mail shop@mohistory.org).

To submit, please send your manuscript on a Macintosh or PC disk , along with one double-spaced hard copy and a one- to two-paragraph abstract, to Gateway, Missouri Historical Society, P.O. Box 11940, St. Louis, MO 63112-0040. We are able to read most word processing programs, although Microsoft Word is preferred. The magazine no longer publishes endnotes, but if desired, notes should be supplied and prepared in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, as we keep them on file and will provide them to those who are interested. Bibliographies are required for most articles. We will happily return any manuscript that we do not use if you enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Not all articles submitted to Gateway are subject to a referee process, but some articles may be sent to scholars or other experts for advice and guidance. In addition, if you are affiliated with a university or college that requires your article be submitted for peer review, such review may be arranged. In any case, you will be notified if your article will be sent out for review. If your manuscript is accepted, the editor will generally let you know within four weeks. Should you have any other questions on our submissions policy, feel free to contact Victoria W. Monks, Editor, by mail (see address above), by telephone (314-746-4558), or by e-mail (vwmonks@mohistory.org).
