A Message From the President
Missouri Historical Society
Welcome to the Missouri Historical Society Web Site

Dr. Robert Archibald, President, Missouri Historical Society

Welcome to www.mohistory.org, the Missouri Historical Society Website.  Here you will find all the information you need to become acquainted, or reacquainted, with the Missouri Historical Society, our facilities, programs, exhibitions, and community involvement.   Whether you are preparing for a visit to our museum or our library and research center, looking for resources for research, checking on membership benefits or volunteer opportunities, or merely engaging in that often rewarding practice of "surfing the 'net," you will find this site both a pleasurable journey and a learning experience.

In addition to finding out basic information such as our location and hours of operation, you can search our Library and Archives on-line catalog, become an MHS member, or take a tour of our facilities.  Just click!

But history is not a museum, nor is it what is written by professional historians in textbooks and "popular history." History is more than a set of facts, for it affirms that we are not the first generation to live in this place, nor will we be the last.  History tells us that what we do here will matter to those who come here after us, because the actions and choices made by those who came before us have had consequences for us.  History is thus a lesson in choices and consequences and can be, must be a catalyst for creating a world with more understanding, appreciation, and concern for those with whom we share this place and this planet.  Our mission is to deepen the understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of community; and facilitate solutions to common problems.

And so through your visit to this Web site you will discover not only the Missouri Historical Society's offerings of intriguing and exciting exhibits and superb archival resources; quality programming that includes lectures, gallery tours, special events; presentations by visiting theater groups and other guests; the promise of excellent food at Meriwether's and of unusual gifts at Louisiana Purchase.  You will also discover the common ground we offer our region's community, an opportunity to participate in the discussion, the thinking, the decision-making processes, that will make this metropolitan region better for those future generations and a better place for us today.
