We were married at the Clayton Plaza Hotel, July 9, 1984, when it was a Holiday Inn. We chose this location because the bride was from St.Louis and an observant Jewish ceremony was desired. The ceremony was held in the main ballroom on the hottest day of the summer (Temperatures reached 109 degrees). This was particularly difficult for the out of town guests who had come from the groom's hometown of Toronto, Ontario. Despite the heat, the hotel managed to keep the air conditioning running at top form. We were married under a traditional wedding canopy-a chuppah. The ceremony was officiated by the groom's uncle, Rabbi Martin Halpern, the spiritual leader of the Shaare Tefila Congregation of Silver Spring, MD and Rabbi Aaron Borow, spiritual leader of Nusach H'Ari B'nai Zion Synagogue of Olive Boulevard in University City. The ceremony was followed by a cocktail hour while the newly married couple spent a traditional period of time in isolation before greeting their guests. The assembly was seated in the ballroom and greeted the couple with fanfare provided by the Merman Orchestra-the only local band with experience playing Jewish wedding music. Traditional separate men and women circle dancing ensued and we were joined by the local high school students who were members of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth chapters of Saint Louis to enliven the evening. Following the completion of the evening we hired a stretch limousine to take us down to what is now Laclede's Landing. We alighted from the vehicle to climb the stairs up to the Arch. We stood under the Arch to share an embrace when suddenly the sprinkler system turned on and soaked us to the skin! Rabbi Lawrence and Berni (Breen) Zierler
