Up, Up, and Away: Ballooning in St. LouisIntroductionSt. Louis BallooningAeronaut Adventures
Introduction

St. Louis's rich aviation history began with its success as a national leader in ballooning. Hosting events, such as the James Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race on three occasions during the twentieth century, not only brought St. Louis worldwide attention but also world-famous aeronauts and their aircraft. St. Louis was able to attract local, national, and even international shows and races through its superb air fields and amenities, support from local leaders and community members, and its central geographic location, which enabled obstruction-free, long-distance flights in any direction. These qualities not only ensured that St. Louis held a role in ballooning history, but it also established an environment for future aviation events, innovations, and businesses to flourish.

Up, Up, and Away: Ballooning in St. Louis reveals the city’s unique role in ballooning and aviation history. Continue through the site to learn more about St. Louis’s ballooning history and about its famous aeronauts. Climb on board and prepare for the exciting journey that lies ahead!
