Flight City: St. Louis Takes to the Air Missouri Historical Society
Introduction Introduction
Since the 1960s, scientists have become more aware of the harmful effects of aviation on the environment, prompting governments to take action in regulating noise pollution, chemical emissions, and construction. Aviation affects natural and cultural resources, and has adverse socio-economic effects on communities. Through the initiation of laws and regulations, governments around the world have lessened aviation’s adverse impact upon the environment and communities. Still, more action is required for the aviation industry to become sustainable.

In reaction to popular demand, the aviation industry is reinventing itself to accomplish a sustainable industry. Airports are attempting to incorporate sustainable design standards into new construction projects, while scientists strive to design environmentally friendly aircraft and biofuels.

Continue to explore the site to learn about the environmental impact upon St. Louis, laws and regulations governing the aviation industry, and to obtain additional resources about aviation and the environment.
