Special Interest Tours—Flight City
Discover why St. Louis could legitimately be called “Flight
City.” The first stop is a narrated visit of Flight City:
St. Louis Takes to the Air, organized by the Missouri Historical
Society. This exhibition highlights the events and personalities
that made St. Louis an aviation center in the twentieth century.
The journey continues on the road with stops to several sites that
made this appellation possible, including sites in Cahokia (the
Air and Space Museum and the Downtown Airport, which opened in 1929)
and a visit to Boeing. Linda Koenig, professional tour guide and
former university teacher, guides you through this aerodynamic exploration.
Box lunch, guided tour with motor coach transportation, and all
admission fees are included.

Taking Flight: The Evolving Transcontinental Airline Passenger Experience
Since Lewis and Clark, transcontinental travel has held a certain
mystique in the minds of Americans. Making ever-faster transcontinental
connections developed into a national obsession — evolving
from a thrilling adventure into a routine part of everyday American
life. Dr. Daniel L. Rust, assistant director of the Center for Transportation
Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, considers the historic
transcontinental airline passenger experience in the context of
today's oft-times hectic and frustrating air journeys, while also
encouraging an appreciation for how air travel has altered our way
of life.
