What Industries? Entrepreneurs combined their passion for flying with the latest technology to build a strong aviation industry in St. Louis. Governments around the world came to depend on St. Louis companies for aircraft and spacecraft, just as the region’s workers came to depend on defense contracts. World War II was a time of major production at Curtiss-Wright, and McDonnell Aircraft grew rapidly during the Cold War. Training schools were located at area airports to satisfy a demand for pilots and mechanics, and two major airlines based their hubs at Lambert Airport in the 20th century. Throughout this section of the exhibit, viewers will track the growth of aviation industries through interactive media and artifacts. Guests will have the opportunity to get a close look at a cockpit procedural trainer and a retired F-4 Phantom II. Visitors will also have the chance to see Project Mercury and Gemini artifacts, including a flight manual, pictures, and space suits. |
