Why Fly?

Early flight was risky and difficult, so why did people do it? Was it the joy of an unobstructed view? Was it the freedom of traveling above the ground? Or was it the thrill and danger of flying faster and higher than anyone else? Whatever the reason, flying promised to provide joy and excitement to many.

Throughout the first section of the exhibit, visitors will explore the motivations behind early aviators' flying ambitions. "Imagine if..." scenarios and a virtual balloon ride will provoke visitors' imaginations while artifacts and photographs of balloon races and air races will convey the excitement of early flight endeavors.
